Few leadership stories begin where David Durocher’s does. The Executive Director of The Other Side Academy did not learn management in a boardroom or a business school. He learned it inside the criminal justice system, arrested for the first time at 13 years old and cycling through addiction, crime and incarceration for the next 25 years. By the age of 38 he had been imprisoned four times, and his final arrest carried a potential sentence that would have effectively ended his life behind bars.
A judge offered what he later called the chance of a lifetime. Instead of prison, Durocher entered a rigorous long-term residential program where residents ran everything, learning accountability and work ethic by living them daily. He did not merely complete the two-year requirement. He stayed for years, helping operate the program before bringing that hard-won model to Utah as a Co-Founder of the academy’s Salt Lake and Denver campuses.
The organization he helps lead saves lives by changing behavior. Through a free residential program centered on accountability and vocational training, students work toward becoming drug-free, crime-free and employed, and two-thirds of graduates achieve exactly that. What makes the approach remarkable is its independence: It operates without government funding and without paid clinical staff, sustained entirely by student-run businesses that double as real-world training grounds.
Those enterprises are formidable. Under Durocher’s oversight they generate enough revenue to fund the organization’s full operating costs while winning best of state recognition and thousands of five-star ratings, performing at the top of their industries. He has launched moving and storage companies, thrift stores and a construction company, all staffed by people rebuilding their lives. His Titan 100 recognition celebrates a leader whose credibility is unmatched because his life embodies the outcomes his organization produces.
Culture is his true craft. Accountability, honesty and ownership are not slogans at The Other Side Academy but daily practice, and Durocher has earned the trust of unlikely allies including law enforcement, financial institutions and civic leaders. He hosts a monthly Rotary meeting on campus, serves on a statewide solutions board and has built partnerships recognized by the police community, a testament to measurable gains in public safety.
His mission ahead is expansion. Durocher has nurtured relationships with corrections officials to pilot a pathway releasing inmates into the academy through early parole, and he plans to add a training facility offering certifications in mechanics, welding and carpentry so students reenter society far better equipped. He spent the first part of his life destroying lives, and he is committed to saving as many as he can for the rest of it. His guiding conviction holds that the culture you have is the behavior you tolerate, and that focusing on the small things keeps the big failures from ever arriving.
